👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes with an electric mixer on medium speed.

  3. Add Vanilla: Mix in the vanilla extract until well incorporated.

  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

  5. Form Dough: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined. Add the milk and continue to mix until a soft dough forms.

  6. Shape Cookies: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

  7. Create Washboard Pattern: Using a fork, gently press down on each dough ball to flatten it slightly and create the characteristic ridged pattern on top.

  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.

  9. Cool: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions:

  • Classic Pairing: Enjoy these cookies with a hot cup of coffee or tea for a comforting snack.

  • Dessert Delight: Serve alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an indulgent dessert.

  • Milk Companion: Their subtle sweetness pairs wonderfully with a glass of cold milk, making them a favorite for all ages.

🔄 Variations:

  • Citrus Twist: Add 1 tablespoon of lemon or orange zest to the dough for a refreshing citrus flavor.

  • Nutty Addition: Mix in 1/2 cup of finely chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, for added texture and flavor.

  • Spiced Version: Incorporate 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm, spiced cookie.

🧊 Storage Tips:

  • Room Temperature: Store the cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

  • Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the baked cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container and store for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
