Mom’s Famous Cream Puffs

Light, airy pastry shells filled with rich homemade vanilla cream and topped with a dusting of powdered sugar or chocolate drizzle — these cream puffs will steal the show every time.


✨ Ingredients

For the pastry shells (choux pastry):

  • 1 cup water

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 4 large eggs

  • ¼ tsp salt

For the creamy filling:

  • 1 (3.4 oz) package instant vanilla pudding mix

  • 1 ½ cups cold milk

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • ¼ cup powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional topping:

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

  • Chocolate sauce or melted chocolate, for drizzling


👩‍🍳 Instructions

👉 Make the shells:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • In a saucepan, bring water, butter, and salt to a boil.

  • Add flour all at once and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until mixture forms a smooth ball and pulls away from the sides.

  • Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.

  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition (this is key for that fluffy rise!).

  • Drop rounded tablespoons (or pipe) onto the baking sheet, spacing apart.
