Made this for a gathering and everyone loved it!
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the chopped cabbage and cook for about 5 minutes until just tender. Drain well.
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 3 minutes.
Stir in the flour and cook for another minute. Gradually whisk in the milk, and cook until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese until melted. Season with salt and pepper.
Place the drained cabbage in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Pour the cheese sauce over the cabbage and mix gently to combine.
In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle evenly over the cabbage mixture.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a bit of a kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the cheese sauce. You can also mix in some cooked bacon or ham for added flavor and protein. If you’re looking for a gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour. For a vegetarian twist, add some sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers to the mix.
