Collard greens are a staple in Southern cuisine, known for their rich, savory flavor and hearty texture. This dish has its roots in African-American culinary traditions, where greens were often cooked slowly with smoked meats to create a comforting and nourishing meal. Today, collard greens are enjoyed across the United States and are especially popular during the holidays. Making collard greens is a wonderful way to explore Southern cooking and bring a taste of the South to your table.
Southern collard greens pair beautifully with a variety of sides. Consider serving them alongside cornbread, which can help soak up the flavorful pot liquor. They also complement dishes like fried chicken, BBQ ribs, or black-eyed peas. For a complete Southern meal, add some mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese to your plate.
