Ingredients and Preparation
Before diving into the recipe, it’s essential to gather all the necessary ingredients and tools. For this churro recipe, you will need:
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of all-purpose flour
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar (for coating)
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (for coating)
Start by preparing the dough. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and add the flour, stirring vigorously until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan. This process is crucial for achieving the right consistency.
Making the Dough
Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the dough to cool slightly. This step is important to prevent the eggs from cooking when added. Once cooled, add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. The dough should become smooth and glossy. Stir in the vanilla extract, enhancing the flavor profile of your churros.
Next, prepare your churro-piping setup. Fill a piping bag fitted with a large star tip with the dough. This will give your churros their characteristic ridged appearance, allowing them to cook evenly and hold onto the cinnamon sugar coating better.
Frying the Churros
Heat the vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C). It’s crucial to maintain this temperature for the perfect churro texture—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Carefully pipe 4-inch strips of dough into the hot oil, using scissors to cut the dough from the piping bag. Fry the churros in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pot, as this can lower the oil temperature and lead to soggy churros.
Fry each batch for about 2-3 minutes, turning them occasionally with a slotted spoon until they are golden brown. Remove the churros from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate.
The Perfect Coating
While the churros are still warm, prepare the cinnamon sugar coating. In a shallow dish, mix the remaining granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Roll each churro in the mixture, ensuring they are generously coated. The warmth of the churros helps the sugar adhere, creating that classic churro look and taste.
