At events, this dish is a surefire success—it’s consistently the one that gets eaten up first.
Directions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent.
Add the ground pork to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until the pork is browned and cooked through.
Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
Add the tomato sauce to the skillet, stirring to coat the pork mixture. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
In a large baking dish, layer half of the cooked pasta, followed by half of the pork and tomato sauce mixture. Sprinkle with half of the mozzarella cheese.
Repeat the layers with the remaining pasta, pork mixture, and mozzarella cheese.
Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving
Variations & Tips
For a spicier version, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the pork mixture. You can also substitute ground beef or turkey for the pork if preferred. For a veggie-packed version, add some chopped bell peppers or mushrooms to the skillet when cooking the onions. If you have picky eaters, consider blending the tomato sauce with some cooked carrots or spinach to sneak in extra veggies. For a gluten-free option, use your favorite gluten-free pasta.
