How to Properly Store Tomatoes So They Last Way Longer

Tomatoes are one of those kitchen staples we all love — fresh, juicy, and packed with flavor. But they’re also incredibly delicate. Store them the wrong way, and they’ll go from perfect to mush in just a few days. 😩

So how do you make tomatoes last longer without sacrificing taste and texture? Here’s the best method to store them properly, whether they’re fresh from the garden or the grocery store.


🟢 Step 1: Know Your Tomato Type

Not all tomatoes are the same. Some store better than others:

  • Unripe (greenish) tomatoes: Need to ripen at room temperature first.

  • Ripe tomatoes: Should be eaten soon — or stored carefully to extend their life.


🍽️ Step 2: Never Refrigerate Unripe Tomatoes

Putting unripe tomatoes in the fridge halts the ripening process and can ruin their flavor. Instead:

  • Leave them on the counter, stem side down.

  • Keep them out of direct sunlight.

  • Let them ripen naturally over a few days.
