Step 1: Prepare the Patty Mixture
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty.
Step 2: Cook the Patties
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the patties. Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Step 3: Prepare the Secret Sauce
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, chopped bacon pieces, ketchup, sugar, and relish. Mix until well combined. This will be your secret sauce.
Step 4: Assemble the Patty Melts
Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
Place a slice of cheddar cheese on the unbuttered side of 3 slices of bread, followed by a cooked beef patty.
Spread a generous amount of secret sauce on top of each beef patty.
Top each patty with a slice of provolone cheese, then cover with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
Step 5: Cook the Patty Melts
Heat a clean skillet over medium heat and add the assembled sandwiches. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Once cooked, remove the patty melts from the skillet and serve immediately.
Cook Notes and Variations
Bread Options: If you don’t have rye bread on hand, you can use any type of bread you prefer, such as sourdough or wheat bread.
Cheese Variations: Feel free to mix and match different types of cheese to suit your taste preferences. Swiss cheese or American cheese are also great options for patty melts.
Secret Sauce Additions: Get creative with the secret sauce by adding ingredients like chopped pickles, Worcestershire sauce, or hot sauce for an extra kick of flavor.
Keto and Low-Carb Version
For a keto-friendly or low-carb version of these patty melts, you can make the following modifications:
Bread Substitute: Replace the rye bread with low-carb bread or lettuce wraps for a keto-friendly option.
Sugar Substitute: Use a sugar alternative like erythritol or stevia instead of sugar in the secret sauce to reduce the carb content.
Condiment Options: Opt for sugar-free ketchup and relish or make your own low-carb versions to keep the sauce keto-friendly.
