Introduction:

Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (also known as Golubtsi or Sarma in various cultures) are a beloved dish found in many cuisines, from Eastern European to Middle Eastern. These rolls feature tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a flavorful filling of seasoned minced meat and rice. Simmered in a rich tomato sauce, this hearty and comforting dish is perfect for a family dinner or special occasion. It’s a great way to make a satisfying meal using simple, wholesome ingredients.


Ingredients:

For the Cabbage Rolls:

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or pork (or a combination of both)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

For the Tomato Sauce:

  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup tomato sauce or tomato juice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp sugar (to balance acidity)
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (or any dried herbs of your choice)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup water or broth (beef or vegetable)
