A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 struck near San Diego on Monday night, sending tremors across Southern California and rattling residents as far as Los Angeles, 120 miles away. The quake, centered just a few miles from the mountain town of Julian, prompted swift emergency alerts but left no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.
Residents React to Sudden Tremors
Many locals received emergency alerts mere seconds before the ground began shaking.
“I can’t recall ever getting a text alert before an earthquake. Came in 5 seconds before my apartment started swaying,” tweeted Marty Caswell, a San Diego resident.
Others described the quake as the strongest they had ever felt in the region.
“That was the biggest earthquake I’ve experienced since moving to San Diego,” one social media user posted.
“I’ve never been in an earthquake before, but I grew up around sinkholes. I just grabbed my son and ran for the door in my boxers—heart in my throat,” another shared.
NBC released footage capturing the chaos, including a mother clutching her baby as she fled and a frightened cat watching its home tremble.
